SM Dance Company
Observation-Based Selection
Company Directors Emily Justinger & Kayla Washburn will observe dancers in their weekly classes, carefully selecting participants based on:
- Commitment
- Technical ability
- Positive behavior
This opportunity is for students who prioritize dance as their first activity. Our observation-based process reflects SM Dance values, fostering a supportive and collaborative environment—free from the pressure and negativity that can come with auditions.
Advanced Choreography Classes
- Selected dancers are invited into Advanced Choreography Classes, where company choreography is created and taught.
- This group provides additional opportunities for students who have mastered their weekly class curriculum and require more to stay engaged and challenged.
- Opportunities are offered across multiple class levels, giving dancers the chance to work with peers outside of their weekly classes and participate in a variety of genres and choreographers.
- Moving into the season, dancers excelling beyond their current classwork may be individually invited to join these advanced groups.
Requirements
Dancers are selected by:
- Emily Justinger (Competition Director)
- Kayla Washburn (Hip Hop Director & Competition Director)
Dancers must exhibit the following:
- Strong technical ability in the genre selected

- Respectful behavior toward teachers and peers

Attendance Policy
- Students in the SM Dance Company are allowed a maximum of three (3) absences per session.
- This policy ensures consistent progress and choreography cohesion.
- Missing key rehearsals—especially those marked as mandatory—or multiple consecutive classes may result in the dancer being unable to participate in a performance or competition.
- Exceptions may be considered in cases of extenuating circumstances (serious illness, family emergencies) provided proper documentation is given.
